The idea of maximizing utility is ridiculous. EA completely discounts individual values and when asking whether something matters, and always forgets to ask “to who?” Save a billion strangers or my son? The moral thing to do is save my son. Because he matters… to me. That is the correct moral choice. So many of these “difficult” moral questions are so easy when framed properly.
We hear a lot about the ‘re enchantment’ of the world these days. I’m not sure we all mean the same thing when we say that, but my understanding would be that we live in a living conscious universe. Matter itself is alive and conscious (including shrimp 🙂)
